One of the main fears for parents when sending their children to college is the safety of the college or university that child is attending. Because this is a concern for so many parents, College Choice has created a ranking that helps address this issue.Christian Amondson, Managing Editor of College Choice, spoke about the ranking when it was released, saying: "Safety may connote patrol cars and uniformed security, but college safety actually encompasses an array of student health, wellness, and security issues. Campus safety doesn't just mean low crime rates and the lack of a party scene—though it could mean those things—it also includes low rates of discrimination, a strong VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) presence, and a number of services and programs that maintain the holistic wellness of their students."
College Choice created the 2016 ranking for Safest Large Colleges and Universities in America using a methodology that took into account more than just the college campus. Information was collected on the cities that the campuses were located in and their crime rates as well as the campus and its crime rates. From there, schools were further eliminated based on a general safety grade that includes anti-discrimination, women's safety, party scene, and fire safety grades.
This information was culled from the U.S. Department of Education, U.S. News and World Report, and individual school websites. Information on the cities campuses are located in was added using public records of crimes within city limits.
