"Cleopatra: A Life is the story of one of the most captivating women in the history of the world told by one of the preeminent biographers of our time," said Jack Elliott, president and CEO of Cohen & Grigsby. "Cleopatra's story has captured the popular imagination on an epic scale for thousands of years, and Stacy Schiff has made the story new again. Cohen & Grigsby is proud to sponsor Schiff's presentation of this fascinating book and be a part of the Drue Heinz Lecture Series, which aligns closely with the firm's dedication to A Culture of Performance."
Navigating through a hazy, perfumed mist of rumor, myth and Hollywood imagery that has surrounded the last queen of Egypt for centuries, Schiff's biography boldly separates fact from fiction to reveal the brilliant, capable ruler in Cleopatra. Schiff is also the author of Vera (Mrs. Vladimir Nabokov), winner of the Pulitzer Prize; Saint-Exupery, a Pulitzer Prize finalist; and A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America, winner of the George Washington Book Prize, the Ambassador Award in American Studies, and the Gilbert Chinard Prize of the Institut Francais d'Amerique. She was awarded a 2006 Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Prior to Schiff's presentation of Cleopatra: A Life, guests of Cohen & Grigsby will be treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the Walton Hall of Ancient Egypt and a presentation titled Restoring Mummies: The Boy from Abydos, the story of Dr. Olsen's "digital dissection" of a toddler's mummy using computerized tomography (CT) scanning technology. A reception will be held after Dr. Olsen's presentation and prior to Schiff's lecture for the guests of Cohen & Grigsby and the Carnegie Museums to provide all guests an opportunity to network and to meet the author, Stacy Schiff. Also prior to Schiff's lecture, the speakers for the 2011-12 Drue Heinz Lectures will be announced.
