"We are proud to present the innovative work of Burton Morris, an artist who has built upon Warhol's legacy to enhance Pittsburgh's high standing in the world of Pop Art," said Jack Elliott, president and CEO of Cohen & Grigsby. "Burton has exhibited his eye-popping art from New York to Paris and Rome to Hong Kong. And now, we welcome him back to his hometown."
Working in the tradition of Pop Art masters of the 1960s and 70s – including Pittsburgh native Andy Warhol – Morris paints popular American icons to put a delightful spin on everyday objects and motifs. He was born in Pittsburgh and earned his bachelor of fine arts degree at Carnegie Mellon University. While working as an art director and creating television commercials, Morris began developing his artistic voice. Finding acceptance in the corporate world, he soon received commissions from Absolut Vodka, AT&T, Perrier, Microsoft, Sony and H.J. Heinz Corporation. And for 10 seasons, fans of the television sitcom Friends saw his work on the set.
Morris' latest work includes a unique project in conjunction with CMU designed to link pop art and technology. To create "Hi-Tech Art," Morris' kinetic images were infused with motion and interactivity.
Another new body of work that will be on display at C&G Galleries is Morris' line of "Night Tables" paintings. He has integrated icons and ideas of famed personalities to create portraits based on their bedside nightstands. The pieces explore the imagination of international and local icons, including Bill Mazeroski, former Pittsburgh Pirates hall-of-famer who hit the winning home run in the 1960 World Series, and Mario Lemieux, former member of the Stanley Cup-winning Pittsburgh Penguins and current team owner.
This new exhibition is the latest example of Cohen & Grigsby's commitment to supporting arts and culture in western Pennsylvania. When the firm re-established its headquarters in the city's Cultural District, the office's reception area was set aside as a gallery where local artisans could feature their works. To date, the firm has hosted several public art exhibitions and has partnered with organizations such as the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh. Cohen & Grigsby is now in the third year of a partnership with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust as the presenting sponsor of the "Trust Presents" series, which brings a diverse array of entertainment to Pittsburgh's Cultural District.
"POP Into the Mind of Burton Morris" will be on display at C&G Gallery starting with a private artist reception on March 23, 2011. To make an appointment to view the exhibit, please call 412-297-4900.
