Cohen & Grigsby Attorney Nancy Heilman Recognized with Eric W. Springer Professionalism Award

Springer Professionalism Award.  Established to recognize outstanding members of the W. Edward Sell American Inn of Court, (formerly the University of Pittsburgh Inn), this award honors deserving lawyers or judges in the region whose life and practice display sterling character and unquestioned integrity, coupled with ongoing dedication to the highest standards of the legal profession and the rule of the law.

As a founding member of the W. Edward Sell American Inn of Court, Heilman served as its president from 2002-2004 and as vice president from 2000-2002.  She remains a member of the organization's executive committee. Heilman also served on the committee that was charged with selecting the first recipient of the Eric W. Springer Professionalism Award.  Without Heilman's knowledge, the other committee members came to the conclusion that Heilman should become the inaugural recipient of the award.

An attorney for more than 20 years, Nancy Heilman is a director and a member of the Labor and Employment and Litigation Groups at Cohen & Grigsby.  She focuses her practice on alternative dispute resolution, labor and employment litigation and general commercial litigation.  

The Eric W. Springer Professionalism Award honors the legacy of Eric W. Springer, a veteran attorney of 50 years whose work includes preparing litigation related to Brown v. Board of Education with Thurgood Marshall.  As a founding member of the W. Edward Sell American Inn of Court, he served as a faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and a research professor in the Graduate School of Public Health.  He co-founded Horty, Springer and Mattern in Pittsburgh, one of the first health care law firms in the country, and was the first African-American to lead the Allegheny County Bar Association.  He has also served on the board of numerous hospitals, health care facilities, corporations and foundations in the Pittsburgh region throughout his prolific career.
