Cody Karey Returns to the Kitchen, While Jon Hameister-Ries is Sent Home on CTV's MASTERCHEF CANADA

TORONTO, April 19, 2015 /CNW/ - The kitchen had a revolving door on tonight's MASTERCHEF CANADA, which saw previously eliminated home cook Cody Karey (@codykarey) of Vancouver, B.C. return to the competition after competing in an intense egg challenge, while fellow Vancouverite Jon Hameister-Ries (@jonhr67) was eliminated by judges Michael Bonacini, Alvin Leung, and Claudio Aprile. The home cooks were challenged to replicate a dish that helped define judge Michael's culinary journey – a sea scallop mousse – and Jon's dish failed to properly set, resulting in his elimination. In the next episode of MASTERCHEF CANADA airing Sunday, April 26 at 7 p.m. (8 p.m. CT) on CTV and CTV GO, the Top 7 face a cook-along Mystery Box Challenge with judge Claudio Aprile, followed by a Tag Team Elimination Challenge that pairs up the home cooks to replicate an elaborate afternoon tea tray. 

In tonight's episode, the remaining Top 7 home cooks were greeted with a surprise twist from the judges: they would not be cooking. Instead, the judges each invited one previously eliminated home cook to compete to earn back their spot in the MasterChef kitchen: Andrew Al-Khouri of Halifax, N.S.; Cody Karey of Vancouver, B.C.; and Kevin Gregory of Fredericton, N.B. The three returning home cooks were challenged to make three perfectly cooked egg dishes in eight minutes – given only five eggs that they'd need to complete them. Andrew and Kevin's dreams of returning to the competition were dashed by a cracked yolk and overcooked eggs, while Cody was given back his white apron and a second chance at the MASTERCHEF CANADA title.

In addition to re-entry into the MASTERCHEF CANADA kitchen, Cody was given the chance to choose the home cook who would enter the pantry and be saved from the impending Elimination Challenge, and would also decide what dish the home cooks would be preparing. Cody's surprise selection was David Jorge, who was asked to choose between three dishes that represented an important step in the judges' culinary journeys, and settled on judge Michael's sea scallop mousse with lobster. 

Puzzled by their savoury mousses, the home cooks struggled with getting the right flavours and textures, to set their dishes in the ramekin bowls, and to properly free their lobster meat from the shell. Jennifer Innis experienced a major setback, and minor breakdown, after realizing she had forgotten to grab eggs from the pantry, a crucial binding agent when making mousse. She managed to overcome the error, and persevered in the challenge. Christopher Siu continued to dominate the kitchen and was named the winner of the challenge with his perfectly cooked lobster and accurately replicated mousse. With their mousses falling flat, Cody, Jon Hameister-Ries, and Michael Motamedi found themselves in the bottom three, with Michael saved by the great flavours of his dish. Jon was ultimately sent home due to his watery mousse, which also mistakenly contained lobster tail cartilage.

Then, the winning home cook receives a strategic advantage in a classic Tag Team Elimination Challenge, pairing up their competitors to replicate an elaborate afternoon tea tray.

The home cooks vying for the title of MASTERCHEF CANADA and the $100,000 cash prize are:

1. Christopher Siu, a Pharmacy Student from Markham, Ont.
2. Cody Karey, a Recording Artist from Vancouver, B.C.
3. David Jorge, a Concrete Contractor from Surrey, B.C.
4. Jennifer Innis, a Dental Hygienist from Vernon, B.C.
5. Line Pelletier, a Canadian Military Veteran and Computer Specialist from Moncton, N.B.
6. Michael Motamedi, an Entrepreneur from Toronto, Ont.
7. Sabrina Poirier, an Office Manager from Montréal, Que.
