WILLCOX, Ariz., July 2, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Apple Annie's, the four-generation family farm and agritourism destination in Willcox, Ariz., will hold its annual Sweet Corn Extravaganza every weekend in July. The event includes roasted sweet corn for on-site eating and fresh-picked ears to take home.
"We grow super-sweet bi-color varieties, specially selected for their exceptional sweetness and flavor," says Mandy Kirkendall, daughter of founders Annie and John Holcomb, who owns and operates the farm with other family members including her grandfather Don Holcomb, her husband David, their son Kaleb, her brother and sister-in-law Matt and Alicia Holcomb, and their children Emily and Aaron.
"Sweet corn is planted every three to five days from early April until mid-July, to ensure that we have plenty of this mouth-watering treat available from early July through September."
The non-GMO corn is picked by professionals at the peak of ripeness. Apple Annie's (appleannies.com), which started with a 6,000-tree apple orchard in the early 1980s, added peaches, pears, and other fruits, and bought a 125-acre produce farm minutes away in 2003, invites customers to pick their own fruits and other vegetables. The family bought Stout's Cider Mill building, a Willcox landmark off I-10, and opened year-round Apple Annie's Orchard Country Store in 2013 with fresh pies, bread, fudge, gourmet jar goods, and gifts.
The Sweet Corn Extravaganza, July 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, and 29, is the first in a series of seasonal local farm-food festivals, including Peach Mania, Watermelon Weekends, Salsa Festival, Green Chili Roast, Apple Harvest Celebration, Corn Maze, Tractor Pull and Antique Show, My-Oh-My Apple Pie Weekend, Scout Weekend, and Pumpkin Festival. The events also benefit the Lupus Foundation of Southern Arizona, March of Dimes, and Youth Haven Ranch, with over $100,000 donated so far.
"Over the years we have added many new activities for our guests to enjoy on their visits, including a Burger Barn serving apple-smoked burgers on weekends, Apple Annie's Attic, our country gift shop, hayrides to the orchard, a huge corn maze, and numerous festivals," says Kirkendall, who was 6 years old when she started checking out customers at the apple orchard.
"Harvest season is a busy time for us, but it is also lots of fun! We love to see the way people enjoy our buttery sweet corn and get to take home their own fresh food for cooking and freezing."
