Summary
Australia is endowed with abundant natural resources, including gold, uranium, coal, iron ore, copper, gold, and natural gas. The mining industry plays an important role in the country's economy. The country had 144.8 Billion tonnes (Bnt) of proved coal reserves, accounting for 12.7% of the global total at the end of 2016. Of the total reserves, sub-bituminous, lignite accounted for 76.5Bnt and bituminous, and anthracite accounted for 68.3Bnt. The deposits are mainly located in Queensland, New South Wales (NSW), Western Australia, South Australia, and Tasmania.
Coal production reached 500 Million tonnes (Mt) in 2016, down by a nominal 0.5% over 2015 as a result of the cessation of mining mainly across the state of Queensland, which was impacted by environmental and geological disruptions. During the review period (2000-2015), the country's production increased by 64% because of the commencement of nearly 53 coal projects.
Over the forecast period (2017-2021), the country's coal production is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.1%, owing to the commencement of operations including the Eagle Downs Mine and the Byerwen Coal Project, both located in Queensland and currently under construction. These projects, with annual run-of-mine (ROM) production capacities of 4.5Mt and 10Mt, respectively, are expected to commence operations by 2017.
Japan and China are the two largest countries that drive the country's export demand and, in 2016, Japan accounted for 31.3% of the country's exports, followed by China with 19.3%.
