Adm. Gary Roughead (USN, ret.), former Chief of Naval Operations, and Dr. Daniel Domenech, Executive Director of the American Association of School Administrators, join CNA Board
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- CNA today announced that Adm. Gary Roughead, recently retired Chief of Naval Operations, and Dr. Daniel Domenech, Executive Director of the American Association of School Administrators and former superintendent of Fairfax County Virginia public schools, have joined its Board of Trustees.

Roughead served as the 29th Chief of Naval Operations from Sep. 29, 2007 to Sep. 23, 2011, when he retired from active duty after 38 years of service. He is one of only two officers to have commanded the Pacific and Atlantic fleets, commanding the U.S. Pacific Fleet and Joint Task Force 519, as well as U.S. Fleet Forces Command, where he was responsible for ensuring Navy forces were trained, ready, equipped and prepared to operate around the world.
A 1973 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Roughead served in six operational commands and was the first officer to command both classes of Aegis ships – the USS Barry (DDG 52), and the USS Port Royal (CG 73). As a flag officer, he commanded Cruiser Destroyer Group 2, the George Washington Battle Group; and U.S. 2nd Fleet/NATO Striking Fleet Atlantic and Naval Forces North Fleet East.
In assignments on shore, Roughead served as commandant of the United States Naval Academy, as the Department of the Navy's chief of Legislative Affairs, and as deputy commander, U.S. Pacific Command. Roughead's awards include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various unit and service awards.
Daniel A. Domenech, Ph.D. has served as executive director of the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) since July 2008. Before joining AASA, he was a senior vice president with McGraw-Hill Education and prior to that served for seven years as superintendent of public schools for Fairfax County, Va., the nation's twelfth largest school system, with 168,000 students.
Domenech began his teaching career as a sixth-grade teacher in New York City's South Jamaica, Queens. He then served as program director for the Nassau Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES). His first job as superintendent was for Long Island's Deer Park Schools. He then became superintendent of Long Island's South Huntington School District – a position he held for 13 years. From 1994-1997 he was district superintendent of the Second Supervisory District of Suffolk County and chief executive officer of the Western Suffolk BOCES.
Domenech is a past president of the New York State Council of School Superintendents, the Suffolk County Superintendents Association, and the Suffolk County Organization for Promotion of Education. He was the first president and cofounder of the New York State Association for Bilingual Education. He has also served on the U.S. Department of Education's National Assessment Governing Board, on the advisory board for the Department of Defense schools, and on the board of directors of the Association for the Advancement of International Education.
He currently serves on the Board of Overseers for the Baldrige Award and on the boards of the Learning First Alliance, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, the Education Policy Institute, the National Student Clearinghouse, and is chair for Communities in Schools of Virginia, the Educational Research Service and the Board of Visitors for the College of Education at the University of West Georgia
Domenech earned his BA from Hunter College in New York City and his Ph.D. from Hofstra University in Uniondale, N.Y.
