CNA Kicks-Off Its "Polar Prep" Campaign With A Free Winter Preparedness Webinar

CHICAGO, Nov. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- CNA will kick-off the company's Polar Prep winter weather preparedness campaign with a free webinar scheduled to take place on Tuesday, November 18 at 10 a.m. CST. The webinar will address ways businesses can protect themselves against potential property and general liability exposures that typically arise during the cold winter months.

"If last year's polar vortex taught us anything, it's that smart business owners can minimize weather-related risks even in the worst of circumstances," said Bill Boyd, senior vice president of Risk Control. "That is why we designed our Polar Prep campaign—to share lessons learned from last winter and provide simple tips that businesses can use to help prepare them against the harsh cold weather."

The webinar will discuss the major lessons learned from claims throughout the 2013-2014 winter months, as well as season and solutions designed to minimize the loss impact to a business. Additionally, CNA Risk Control will focus on five key tips for businesses throughout the upcoming winter:

TIP 1: Make sure you have adequate heat to withstand extended sub-freezing temperatures. Service your heating system early and if anyone reports cold temperatures in a portion of the building find out why and correct the problem. Maintain adequate temperatures when the office is closed for holidays or weekends.
TIP 2: Do your sprinkler maintenance early, before cold weather hits. If you have unheated areas and dry pipe systems, make sure low point drains are checked by a qualified contractor or maintenance staff. Do you have reliable heat in the dry pipe valve enclosures?
TIP 3: Know the location of your water shutoff valves - both for your domestic water supply and the sprinkler system - the difference between a nuisance cleanup and a major disruption often depends on how long the water runs.
TIP 4: Make sure your winter plan not only includes property prevention, but also liability and employee safety tactics, such as assigning and training employees on the snow removal, equipment and vehicles they will operate in advance of a winter event.
TIP 5: Know your risk transfer exposures for any vendors you hire during the winter for services, such as plowing and snow removal. Know the language in your contract for indemnification.

The webinar is CNA's first Polar Prep event in what will be a series of presentations, social media posts and field initiatives scheduled to take place throughout the 2015 winter season.
