CHICAGO, Oct. 7, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Clinical Oncology Dietitian Kristen Trukova, MS, RD, LDN, CNSC, CSO, from Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) at Midwestern Regional Medical Center (Midwestern) recently received the Oncology Dietetic Practice (ON DPG) Distinguished Practice Award at the 2015 Food & Nutrition Conference & ExpoTM (FNCE®) in Nashville, TN.
The annual award recognizes an ON DPG member who has promoted nutrition as a vital component of oncology patient care through various opportunities including presentations and publications, involvement in oncology-related organizations, and active involvement in patient activities. The organization's mission is to provide direction and leadership for quality oncology nutrition practice through education and research.
"Kristen Trukova has a true commitment to educating oncology patients and her community on optimal nutrition while undergoing cancer care. She has made significant contributions to research and receiving the Distinguished Practice Award is well deserved," said Tricia Cox, Chair of ON DPG.
At CTCA at Midwestern, Trukova helps patients diagnosed with cancer address nutritional deficiencies, reduce side effects of treatment and improve their diets. In addition to meeting individually with patients, she also teaches nutrition classes at the hospital. While working at CTCA at Midwestern, Trukova completed a thesis as part of a master's degree program, conducting a study to see if screening for vitamin D deficiency and aggressive vitamin D repletion benefited breast cancer patients. Her research showed that vitamin D deficiencies were common in breast cancer patients and as a result, vitamin D blood testing was implemented for all patients.
Trukova earned a master's degree in nutritional sciences from Eastern Michigan University. Prior to her graduate studies, she received a bachelor's degree in dietetics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and completed a dietetic internship at California State University – Long Beach. She is a member of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics and the Illinois Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics.
Trukova is honored to be looked upon by her peers as a leader in oncology nutrition. "I am flattered to receive this highly-esteemed award. I enjoy participating in oncology nutrition research as we strive to find new options for patients to keep them at optimal health while undergoing cancer treatment and minimizing side effects," said Trukova.
"Kristen exemplifies the CTCA at Midwestern Mother Standard® of care, helping us focus on the whole needs of each individual patient, not just the cancer," said Scott Jones, President and CEO of CTCA at Midwestern. "We are proud to have her on our team. Her passion for research and to make a difference in our patients' lives is to be commended."
