Clickspring Design and MBC Launch Dubai Broadcast Studios
21st Century Broadcast Environment Inspired by the Fractal Geometry of Islamic Architecture
NEW YORK, March 10, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- This week Clickspring Design announced the launch of their latest broadcast studio, MBC Dubai. Founded in London in 1991, MBC (Middle East Broadcasting Center) is the largest private media company in the Middle East and North Africa. It has been headquartered in Dubai since 2002. The new facility is located in Dubai's Studio City — a three square kilometer area that is home to film and broadcast production.
Clickspring's challenge was to design a 1,854 Sq. meter (19,957 sq. ft.), multi-level, on-air studio environment with three broadcast venues dedicated to news, sports, children's and daytime programming. The scope of work included renovating three floors of editorial office space which included private offices, hot-desk workstations, conference areas, editorial suites, a café, and the building's secure main lobby.
The main studio features a dramatic spiral staircase connecting the three studios via a mezzanine level. The staircase is clad with an integrated media display. Other features of the main studio include a suspended catwalk bridge, demonstration kitchen, expansive double-height LED vista wall and a 5-meter star-shaped social media display tower which intersects each studio. Multiple tracking monitor arrays and the inclusion of an elaborate, reconfigurable anchor desk complete this dynamic broadcast space.
The Clickspring Design team was inspired by classic Islamic architecture and design, especially the geometry of tessellation — using small blocks or squares as in mosaic. The design of the studio focused on subtractive forms and irregular tessellation.
"Islamic architecture is particularly rich in aperiodic tessellations or irregular tilings, patterns which modify themselves in a non-repeating pattern while retaining symmetries by virtue of finite groups of rotations or reflections," said Erik Ulfers, Founder and President of Clickspring Design. "In terms of form, volumes were often subtracted from an overall profile to create and define functional spaces; these forms retain their formal identities even if portions of their volumes are removed. These techniques proved key in creating a uniquely Middle Eastern sensibility for a 21st century space."
The verticality of Dubai's cityscape provided additional stimulus for the design — from the minarets of the old city to the continuously evolving skyline of astonishing skyscrapers. The result is a cohesive media landscape, recognizable across multiple platforms, that reflects both the rich history of the region and the modern aesthetic and business model of the MBC client.
