Cleveland Court Reporter Bruce Matthews is Elected Secretary/Treasurer of the National Court Reporters Association
VIENNA, Va., Aug. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bruce Matthews, the chief court reporter for the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Ohio, has been elected to the office of Secretary/Treasurer of the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA), a 19,000-member association representing court reporters and providers of captioning and realtime transcription services for the legal, broadcasting, business, government, and educational communities throughout the United States (www.ncraonline.org).
Matthews, a former freelance court reporter, resides in suburban Cleveland. He will be serving as NCRA's Secretary/Treasurer for a second consecutive year after having previously served in multiple roles on the NCRA Board in the early to mid 1990s, including as the organization's President in 1994-1995. Matthews holds the Registered Diplomate Reporter (RDR) and Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR) credentials and was installed as a Fellow of the Academy of Professional Reporters (FAPR), one of the profession's highest honors, in 1988.
Matthews's service to the stenographic court reporting community and to NCRA is substantial. He has chaired numerous NCRA committees, including the Constitution and Bylaws Committee, Nominating Committee, Realtime Contest Committee, the Committee on Professional Ethics, the Contracting Task Force, the Finance Committee, the Convention Committee, the President's Advisory Council, the Realtime Certification Committee, and the Reporter Compensation Task Force. Matthews also is a former Chair of the National Court Reporters Foundation and is currently on the advisory board of the Academy of Court Reporting and Technology in Cleveland.
In 1990, Matthews received the Martin Fincun Spark Award and the Glenn Stiles Distinguished Service Award, and remains the only individual to receive both awards in a single year. He also sits on the board of Clark State Community College, where he earned an associate degree in applied business in 1973, preceding his 38-year career as a stenographic court reporter.
