WESTON, Fla., Aug. 14, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Cleveland Clinic Florida has reclaimed the top spot, ranking No. 1 in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale market for 2018-2019, according to the newly released annual ranking of Best Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. The annual survey ranks 65 hospitals in the local metropolitan area of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.
Cleveland Clinic Florida had its highest statewide showing, ranking fourth among 259 Florida hospitals, and maintaining two nationally ranked specialties: Gastroenterology & GI Surgery ranked No. 25 and Orthopedics ranked No. 42. A complete list of newly ranked hospitals is available online at www.usnews.com/hospitals.
"Cleveland Clinic has a 30-year history of providing world class care in South Florida, improving the health and quality of life for countless individuals and families across the region," said Wael Barsoum, MD, CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic Florida. "This recognition speaks to the quality of care and universal commitment of all our caregivers to put patients first, and why we are once again South Florida's top hospital."
Cleveland Clinic Florida ranked "high performing" in four specialties: Cancer, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Geriatrics, and Neurology & Neurosurgery. For the first time, Cleveland Clinic Florida also rated "high performing" in all nine common conditions and procedures evaluated by U.S. News & World Report: Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair, Aortic Valve Surgery, Heart Bypass Surgery, Heart Failure, Colon Cancer Surgery, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Hip Replacement, Knee Replacement, and Lung Cancer Surgery.
"As a tertiary-level hospital, we care for very sick patients in need of advanced, complex care, which is reflected in a high patient acuity rating on par with much larger, nationally ranked hospitals," added Dr. Barsoum. "The demand for this high-quality, complex care has led us to our current hospital expansion that will add 75 beds and increase our capacity by 50 percent. This will allow Cleveland Clinic to meet the growing needs of the Florida communities and patients we are proud to serve."
Cleveland Clinic Florida embarked on a major expansion in 2015 fueled by $302 million in capital investments, which has resulted, this year in the establishment of a medical office in Wellington, the July opening of the 73,000-square-foot Coral Springs Family Health Center, and major expansion on Cleveland Clinic's main campus in Weston consisting of a new 221,000-square-foot hospital tower and expanded Emergency Department.
U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, the adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other data largely determined the rankings in most specialties.
