CLAREMONT, Calif., Dec. 10, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Claremont Lincoln University (CLU) announced a new educational initiative today that focuses on fighting against human trafficking through online technology. The training, titled Anti-Human Trafficking: Widening the Lens, will deliver a six-week, highly interactive online course that was created by subject matter experts in the field of human trafficking. By Presidential Proclamation, January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month and the course will be available starting in January of 2019 as an effort to increase awareness. The course was designed to build the knowledge and skills of everyday citizens to recognize and help prevent human trafficking around the globe.
"Human trafficking is a form of slavery and is inconsistent with the values of respect and dignity that CLU fosters," says Dr. Eileen Aranda, University President at CLU. "We are committed to doing our part to impact this problem by introducing learners to the issue of human trafficking, how to identify when and to whom it is happening, and to learn strategies to intervene or prevent it." According to Dr. Aranda, "Students will learn not only about human trafficking, but they will also gain new perspectives regarding the systemic problems that contribute to the cycle of trafficking."
Each year, there are approximately 600,000 to 800,000 victims trafficked across state, national, and international borders across the world. Traffickers are often violent individuals who use force, fraud or coercion to enslave their victims. The grooming process for victims often includes rape, physical abuse, starvation, confinement, beatings, forced drug use, and threats to both the victim and the victim's family. Recent UN reports have called for additional education and noted how a "better understanding of human trafficking markets and routes will strengthen analysis and prevention."
