Deborah King, a certified image professional and chair of the Civility Proclamations Committee, took the audience back to March 11, 2011 the date when a terrible triple tragedy struck, impacting AICI's Tokyo, Japan Chapter in the form of a 9.0 Earthquake followed by the calamitous Tsunami and catastrophic partial meltdown of the Fukieshima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. In the days, weeks and months following, Hitomi Ohmori, the chapter's past president who now serves as international vice president of education, communicated how their chapter moved ahead relentlessly providing comfort and relief to fellow countrymen, calling their efforts "Civility in Action." Kayoka Ikuko Kozu, president, accepted the 2011 Civility Star Award on behalf of the chapter.
Members around the world watched and waited in fear and profound sorrow for Japan, but none more so than the neighboring AICI Singapore Chapter, who had already scheduled their Annual Education Conference, which fell just days following this disaster. The Chapter leaders immediately made the decision to donate the proceeds to aid the victims of their Japanese neighbors. In making the announcement of the 2011 Civility Star Award to the Singapore Chapter, King said, "This chapter exhibited the highest degree of the Three Civility Principles, Respect, Restraint and Responsibility." The award was accepted by Singapore Chapter President Li Kin Pang.
"We created the Civility Counts Project to raise awareness of the shocking decline of civility in our society," says Yasmin Anderson-Smith, the international vice president of marketing and co-chair of the project. "We awarded our first Civility Star Award during our 2010 Vancouver, Canada conference to Civility Expert/Trainer Lew Bayer, co-author of The Power of Civility (THRIVE Publishing), however, the 2011 Civility Star recipients really became a moving moment during the ceremony. Frankly, there wasn't a dry eye in the house."
