Civil Rights Attorney Carney Shegerian Comments on Recent Ruby Tuesday Sex Discrimination Case
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Two male employees have filed suit against the popular restaurant chain, Ruby Tuesday, for violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The company recently solicited job applications for lucrative positions inviting only women to apply. Male employees were excluded from the positions, which would have included housing and rent paid by the company.
Attorney Carney Shegerian, founder of the Los Angeles County based employment discrimination firm Shegerian & Associates, issued a statement regarding the case.
"It is shocking that the company failed to recognize the consequences of offering jobs to women only under these circumstances. The Civil Rights Act has been on the books for more than 40 years now, and its provisions against this kind of sex discrimination are pretty clear cut," said Shegerian.
"In these circumstances, it is nearly impossible for a company to hire only female employees to a position without suffering legal consequences," Shegerian went on to say.
"It's encouraging to see that the EEOC didn't allow such a case to slip through the cracks and has made an effort to send a message to employers who have become lax in their judgments about outright discrimination."
Winner of the 2013 Trial Attorney of the Year Award from the Consumer Attorney Association of Los Angeles, Shegerian is the founder of Shegerian & Associates.
