"Having the additional degrees of freedom made possible by the CIVCO Protura 6 degrees of freedom table has been an important advance for our program," said Dr. Tim R. Williams, M.D., Medical Director, Lynn Cancer Institute, Boca Raton Regional Hospital. "We do over a hundred cases of SRS and SBRT a year and many cases require the additional precision that can only be achieved with roll, pitch and yaw motion. Particularly in base of skull tumors, the added accuracy of these table adjustments brings us to a level as high as or higher than any competing technology."
Protura fully enables IGRT by providing sub-millimeter corrections with 6 degrees of freedom. CIVCO's Universal Couchtop is SBRT enabled and IGRT friendly. The lightweight UCT features compatibility with Body Pro-Lok™ bridges for comfortable immobilization for hypofractionation.
Protura and UCT have provided the center with additional confidence and the ability to treat the most challenging cases. "The Protura 6D table has provided us with more accurate positioning during patients' setup, hence more confidence on the precision on delivered treatments," said Charles Shang, M.S., B.MED, D.ABR, Director of Medical Physics, Lynn Cancer Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. "We were particularly pleased with the fact that we were able to fine tune 'roll, pitch and rotate' without reentering the room. For some challenging cases, such as intracranial and spinal SRS where rotations became particularly crucial, this system has demonstrated its unique advantages. We have analyzed more than 40 setups of lung SBRT, and found more than 57% of them need at least 1.0 degree corrections in either pitch or roll rotation. Compared with manual setups, the 6D automated robotic table did increase our patient setup efficiency when non-translational correction is warranted." Shang and Williams have had the opportunity to publish and present their data at an October international conference.
CIVCO currently has 12 robotic systems installed and several more pending installation. "Improving clinical workflow, accuracy and efficiency have been primary goals of UCT and Protura," said Mike Saracen, Vice President of Advanced Robotics and IGRT at CIVCO. "It is great to see clinics realizing immediate benefits from our advanced products."
