For months now, city leaders across the country and the residents we serve in our communities have watched and waited patiently for our leaders in Washington to negotiate a solution that lets our country meet its financial obligations and takes a balanced approach to reducing the nation's deficit.
At a time when the consequences of the deep recession continue to play out in our communities with too many residents unable to find a job, too many small businesses unable to access the credit they need to hire workers and serve their neighborhoods and too many families struggling to hold on to their homes and to make ends meet, what America needs from Washington is action, not more gridlock.
In our communities, we make difficult choices every day to balance our budgets while keeping our residents and visitors safe, fostering economic development, and maintaining our streets, bridges and sewers. It's the job we signed up to do.
As critical deadlines near, we urge our leaders in Washington to set aside the partisanship and do the same – take action to meet our commitments, get our fiscal house in order, and invest in our future.
The National League of Cities is the nation's oldest and largest organization devoted to strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
