Today, April 18, 2011 is the deadline for Americans to file their 2010 tax return, which also reminds taxpayers how much of their hard-earned money goes toward paying for irresponsible government spending.
"Tax day forces most taxpayers to make a sobering assessment of their personal financial obligations, it seems that Congress for the first time in a long time is doing the same," said MacMillin Slobodien, Executive Director of Our Generation. "Before Congress adjourned last week, the House passed a budget that would trim nearly four trillion dollars from the national debt over 10 years. This is the first, crucial step toward restoring the country on a path of fiscal accountability."
Policy changes that force the government to spend within its means also have positive long-term effects. According to a recent report from Moody's Investors Service, "The latest budget proposals from President Obama and the Republican leadership would lower the U.S. deficit and debt levels and be positive for the country's credit rating, which is Aaa with a stable outlook. . . . Both proposals mark a significant shift towards indicating a willingness and plan to improve its debt outlook."
With the budget debate not yet finalized and an upcoming vote to increase the debt limit, Congress needs to make sure that the ultimate solution will effectively end – or at least significantly reduce – our government's spending addiction.
