CITGO Lemont Refinery Raises More Than $65,000 in Third Annual MDA Shamrock Bowl
Nearly 250 CITGO Employees, Contractors and Sponsors Bowl to Support MDA in Illinois
ROMEOVILLE, Ill., April 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- On Thursday, March 14, 246 CITGO Lemont Refinery employees and contractors raised more than $65,000 at the Third Annual Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Shamrock Bowl. Held at Brunswick Zone in Romeoville, the event benefits the MDA and its muscular dystrophy advocacy, awareness, research and support services for families in Illinois. CITGO has proudly supported the MDA for the past 27 years and is MDA's largest corporate sponsor.
"The funds raised at this event will provide help and hope to our local families. This could not be possible without the continued support and partnership that we have with CITGO, as well as all the generous sponsors of our Shamrock Bowl event," said April Elashik, Executive Director of the MDA Chicago-land offices. "MDA provides essential services, such as flu shots, medical equipment repairs, support groups, local clinics and a week-long summer camp for families in our area who are battling neuromuscular disease. We also provide hope that one day we will find cures and treatments for the more than 40 types of muscle disease that fall under the MDA umbrella."
This year, 45 teams comprised of Lemont Refinery employees, contractors and sponsors, as well as their friends and family, participated in the event. All attendees enjoyed an evening of bowling, dinner, contests and raffles, as well as an award banquet where winners were presented with trophies and raffle prizes were drawn.
The MDA Shamrock Bowl is an annual highlight for Lemont Refinery employees because it gives them the opportunity to support life-saving research and meaningful social services to MDA while enjoying a night of camaraderie with their colleagues, friends and family. More than 30 businesses, including the CITGO Lemont Refinery, provided donations and other assistance to help break last year's fundraising record of $60,000.
The CITGO Lemont Refinery employs more than 800 local residents on a full-time and contract basis in support of the local economy. While Lemont refinery employees produce high quality fuels for a large portion of the network of more than 6,000 locally owned CITGO stations across the country, they also make a major positive impact on the community. Each year more than 2,500 volunteer hours and thousands of dollars are given in support of community programs such as Muscular Dystrophy Association, United Way and a variety of environmental and preservation programs.
