Thirty-five CCAT members took to the grounds of Shady Oaks on June 13, 2013 to spruce up the camp for summer by preparing flower beds, removing weeds and undertaking other general clean up tasks. CITGO, with support from JM Electric and Sanchez Group, provided construction equipment to replace light poles and to move large piles of cement blocks and gravel. CITGO is committed to improving lives through hands-on involvement, and the CITGO Community Action Team was proud to put its motto "Neighbors Helping Neighbors" into action on this day of community volunteering.
Scott Steele, a caretaker at Shady Oaks Camp, shared his gratitude to the CITGO volunteers saying, "For more than 12 years, the great people of the CITGO Community Action Team have been coming out to Shady Oaks Camp to help us get ready for opening day. Without the hard work and dedication of the employees and their families, we could never be ready in time for the arrival of our campers. CITGO truly cares about the community and we are so grateful to have them in our lives."
Founded in 1947, Shady Oaks Camp is dedicated to providing people of all ages and backgrounds who have a disability with the same recreational opportunities and summer camp experience that their peers without disabilities enjoy. The camp provides an opportunity for personal growth, increased self-esteem, and social skills building.
