CITGO Helps Onslow Community Soup Kitchen Deliver Meals To Those In Need
Non-Profit Named CITGO Fueling Good Project Winner
JACKSONVILLE, N.C., March 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- CITGO Petroleum Corporation has named the Onslow Community Outreach Soup Kitchen a Fueling Good Project winner for its ongoing efforts to provide meals and support for elderly and at-risk individuals across Onslow County. The non-profit has been awarded $5,000 in CITGO Gift Cards to help with fuel costs as it delivers meals to those in need.
"This is the second time in three years that we have been recognized by CITGO for fueling good," said Don Herring, chairman of Onslow Community Outreach. "Our success is a testament to the tremendous amount of support the program has in the Onslow community. We appreciate everyone who voted for us and the generosity of CITGO in making this program possible."
Since 1990, the Onslow Community Outreach Soup Kitchen has provided underprivileged members of the community with the essentials they need, including food, shelter and medical assistance. The Soup Kitchen serves more than 100,000 meals every year, driving 31,000 miles annually to deploy soup kitchen trucks in impoverished areas. In addition, the organization provides emergency shelter and medical help.
"The Soup Kitchen started with one stove and a pot of soup nearly 25 years ago. Today, we prepare more than 100,000 meals each year to help reduce hunger and malnutrition," added Herring. "Our organization is dependent on the dedication of our volunteers and the exceptional generosity of community partners like CITGO. Without them we wouldn't be able to thrive year after year."
Onslow Community Outreach Soup Kitchen is one of nine CITGO Fall Fueling Good program winners selected from more than 400 organizations through a nationwide online vote. More than 25,000 votes were cast to help identify the latest winners in one of four categories: Environmental Protection and Conservation; Education and Social Investment; Energy Assistance; and Health.
Since 2009, the CITGO Fueling Good Project has rewarded more than 220 organizations, further helping them to do good in their own communities. Visit www.FuelingGood.com for more information.
