CITGO Announces Donation To Assist Hurricane Harvey's Relief Efforts In Houston And Affected Areas
HOUSTON, Sept. 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- CITGO Petroleum Corporation announced today that it has made a donation of $3 million to the City of Houston's Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund to assist local authorities in providing services to those afflicted by the Hurricane's devastating path. The donation will ensure that local first response teams can continue their relief efforts, provide basic necessities such as food and water to flood victims, and address other immediate needs.
"As a company with operations throughout the Gulf Coast, we have seen first-hand the devastation caused by this historic storm. Our hearts are heavy and we are grieved for the many victims of this catastrophic event, some of which include our very own employees," said CITGO Acting President and CEO José Pereira.
In Houston, the $3 million will be allocated immediately as an emergency fund to support the City of Houston with its relief efforts. Additionally, CITGO will be donating a percentage of fuel sales that will go toward housing rebuilding efforts in the most disadvantaged communities that were affected in our region. Details of this program are being developed and will be made public once finalized.
"We are overwhelmed by the support from our corporate partners including CITGO Petroleum Corporation," said Mayor Sylvester Turner. "Their social responsibility is amazing and their generous contribution will go a long way to help Houstonians get back on their feet, after this historic natural disaster."
The $3 million donation is part of an overall fund of up to $5 million that CITGO has set aside to provide aid to those affected by the Hurricane's path of destruction particularly in Corpus Christi, Houston and Lake Charles where the company has operations.
"It is our hope that this donation will help alleviate the suffering of those impacted by Hurricane Harvey throughout the region," Pereira added.
CITGO has refineries in Corpus Christi, TX, with more than 1,000 employees and contractors; Lake Charles, La., with nearly 2,000 employees and contractors, and its corporate headquarters in Houston, TX, with nearly 1,000 employees and contractors. The company has historically supported disaster relief programs as part of its social responsibility efforts in the communities in which it operates and beyond.
