CIRCA Celebrates The Pairing Of "Scotches And Watches"
Leading International Jewelry Buyer Teams Up with Michael Jordan's The Steak House N.Y.C. to Pair the Top Five Most Iconic Men's Watches of the Modern Era with Fine Scotches
NEW YORK, April 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- CIRCA, the leading international buyer of pre-owned jewelry, diamonds and watches recently partnered with Michael Jordan's The Steak House N.Y.C. to share their expertise on scotches and watches with aspiring collectors.
CIRCA Co-Founder Jeffrey Singer, an expert with more than 30 years of experience in the luxury jewelry industry, spoke about the top five most iconic men's watches of modern times along with tips for building a world-class watch collection. Diageo Spirits' Spike McClure, who is also known as the Master of Whisky, showcased the scotch pairings for these beloved timepieces while guests tried on the iconic watches, tasted the scotches and sampled hors d'oeuvres.
"We presented guests with a tasting of five of the finest scotches offering a variety of flavor profiles that complemented the exquisite watches presented by CIRCA," said Penny Glazier, Manhattan restaurateur and owner of Michael Jordan's The Steak House N.Y.C. "The chef's selection of hors d'oeuvres were designed to accompany the complex tastes of the scotches without overwhelming the flavor."
While guests sampled the pairings, Singer explained what each of the top five watches had in common, "The watches we're showcasing tonight each demonstrate meticulous engineering, timeless designs and elegant craftsmanship. Each watch differs in appearance yet reflects the same iconic characteristics that make them some of the most recognizable timepieces of the modern era."
The Top Five Most Iconic Watches of the Modern Era and the Distinguished Spirit Pairing:
The Cartier 38mm Pasha is a unique timepiece that exudes power and elegance through the construction of its round, water resistant case, four Arabic numerals, screw-down crown cap and sword-shaped hands. It was paired with the Glenmorangie Signet, which is known for its delicious, melting sweetness and explosive spiciness.
Introduced in 1963, the Rolex Daytona Cosmograph was designed to meet the demands of professional racing drivers. With its highly reliable chronograph and bezel with tachymetric scale, it allows drivers to perfectly measure average speeds. The Cosmograph Daytona was coupled with the Johnnie Walker Platinum Label, a rich and refined complex blend of single malt and grain whiskies matured for a minimum of 18 years.
A revolutionary timepiece, the Audemar Piguet Royal Oak is immediately recognizable thanks to its state-of-the-art engineered strongbox case and octagonal bezel secured by eight hexagonal screws. The Royal Oak was paired with an alluring singlet malt that finishes with a delicate wisp of smoke, the Oban 18 Year Limited Edition Single Malt.
The Patek Philippe Calatrava's sleek lines and subtle elegance express artistic ingenuity at its very finest. The endearing quality reflects the relentless pursuit of perfect that has always been at the core of Patek Philippe and was paired with an elegant and rare malt, the Talisker 30-Year-Old.
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date was launched in 1956 as the first calendar wristwatch to display the day as well as the date. Faithful to the noble origins, the Day-Date is made exclusively of gold or platinum. The Day-Date was coupled with Johnnie Walker King George V, a scotch whisky designed to recreate how Johnnie Walker might have tasted when it was first supplied to the British Royal Household in 1934.
Outside of the top five most iconic watches and the scotch pairings, Singer highlighted the top five watches that hold the most value in the secondary market, including Rolex, Patek, Audemar and Lange & Sohne. To close off the evening, Singer explained that today's valuable pieces were not always the most sought-after and shared tips for building an "A+" watch collection.
- Better names will always have a better chance of retaining a higher derivative of the retail price; the two strongest are Rolex and Patek Philippe, though Lange & Sohne has come on very strong during the last couple of years.
- If buying a new watch, stick to retailers who are authorized distributors of the brands you are considering.
- Fine watches, whether they seem to need maintenance or not, should still be regularly brought in for checkups. To that end, you are encouraged to go back to the source from where you purchased, or to an authorized service center for the brand you have. In most cases, once every 18 months should suffice.
- Buy what you love, love what you buy. When you no longer wear it or enjoy it, sell it and move on to new opportunities.
