Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Once Again Among U.S. News & World Report's Top Children's Hospitals
PHILADELPHIA, June 27, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) has once again ranked among the country's finest in the 2017-18 U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of Best Children's Hospitals announced today. Nine of CHOP's clinical programs ranked within the top three nationally in the 10 specialty areas evaluated in the U.S. News survey. CHOP ranked second overall on the Honor Roll, which recognizes the 10 hospitals with the highest rankings across all specialties, and is the only pediatric hospital in the tri-state region named to the prestigious list.
The 11th annual rankings recognize the top 50 pediatric facilities across the U.S. in 10 pediatric specialties, including cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology.
"We are honored to be so highly ranked in the U.S. News ranking, and to be in the company of other leading children's hospitals," said Madeline Bell, president and chief executive officer of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "It takes the ongoing expertise of everyone at CHOP to help make breakthroughs happen every day for our patients and their families," Bell said.
The U.S. News Best Children's Hospitals rankings rely on clinical data and on an annual survey of pediatric specialists. The rankings methodology considers clinical outcomes, such as mortality and infection rates, efficiency and coordination of care delivery and compliance with "best practices." Surgical success rates, adequacy of nurse staffing, procedure and patient volume, availability of programs for particular illnesses and conditions and much more were components of the survey.
Each of the 187 facilities surveyed for the 2017-18 Best Children's Hospitals rankings is either a freestanding children's hospital or a "hospital within a hospital" – a large, essentially autonomous multidisciplinary pediatric department within a major medical center. Most are members of the Children's Hospital Association (CHA). In the 2017-18 rankings, 81 of the 187 surveyed hospitals were ranked among the top 50 in at least one specialty. The 2017-18 Best Children's Hospitals Honor Roll recognizes the 10 hospitals with the highest rankings across all specialties.
