CHILDREN AT RISK Releases Texas Charter School Report
HOUSTON, April 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Across Texas, charter schools have ballooned in popularity amongst parents and reform advocates. However, little research regarding their academic performance has been performed. CHILDREN AT RISK, the organization that produces the Annual School Rankings, has released the Charter School Report to inform stakeholders throughout Texas on the actual performance of public charter schools.
Key Findings:
- YES Prep, KIPP, Idea Public Schools, Texas Preparatory Network, and Uplift Education are taking disadvantaged students to new heights of academic success. These high-performing charters excel in the education of Texas children, and do so in spite of serving a greater percentage of economically-disadvantaged children than the state average, at the majority of their campuses.
- There are a few charters schools that are significantly outperforming the state, but serve a low proportion of economically disadvantaged students. Schools like Basis San Antonio and Leadership Prep School perform extremely well, but do so with less than 10% of their total student population being economically disadvantaged.
- Some charters simply perform terribly academically and are a disservice to their students, including C O R E Academy, Joshua's Learning Land, and Southwest Preparatory School.
"Texas has many charter schools that are performing well," said Dr. Bob Sanborn, president and CEO of CHILDREN AT RISK. "However, those charters that are at the bottom of the list are doing more harm than good for our children and should be closed."
