Chicago State University Announces Rightsizing; Eliminates 126 Positions
Move Focuses on Student Needs while Streamlining Operations, Saving Nearly $5 Million Over Next Two Years
CHICAGO, April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- In an effort designed to more strategically focus on student needs and academic success while managing expenses, Chicago State University today announced the elimination of 126 employees. The action is expected to save nearly $5 million over the next two years.
Over the last several months, the University's administrative team initiated a comprehensive workforce planning process, reviewing processes, technology and duplication of roles while seeking to centralize functions such as IT, Human Resources and Finance. The team worked with department leaders and union representatives from across the campus in an inclusive process to examine work plans, work assignments, teaching loads, contracts, strategic alignment and expense management to seek efficiencies and effectiveness while preserving important programs that benefit students.
Seven percent of the workforce was eliminated including 25 administrators, 37 civil service personnel, 50 temporary extra help employees, three vacant faculty positions and 11 vacant civil service positions. Employees had individual meetings yesterday and have been provided with appropriate severance based on tenure and ten hours of counseling and support from the Chicago State University Career Center.
"Our goal was to protect the educational quality and student services that CSU provides, while eliminating positions that did not directly impact the University's mission and to treat each employee with dignity and respect," said Dr. Wayne D. Watson, president, Chicago State University.
The initiative is expected to save $250,000 by the end of the fiscal year June 30, 2010, $1.7 million by the end of the next fiscal year, and $3 million by June 30, 2012 – a savings of nearly $5 million over the next two years.
