Chicago magazine releases exclusive poll results showing that more Chicago Catholics are leaving the Church
CHICAGO, Dec. 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Why is Chicago—historically one of the nation's most Catholic cities—becoming less Catholic eight times faster than the nation as a whole? And can new archbishop Blase Cupich help change that? The January issue of Chicago magazine, on newsstands Thursday, features Catholics at a Crossroads anchored by an exclusive opinion survey of Catholics and ex-Catholics in Cook and Lake Counties (the area encompassed by the Archdiocese of Chicago). Plus: An analysis of what continued shrinkage would mean for the entire city (not just Catholics); a Q&A in which Cupich talks about the challenges he faces; a snapshot of the archdiocese's finances; a who's who in the hierarchy; and—just for fun—a 20-question quiz.
The issue also highlights five homegrown innovations with the potential to dramatically change medicine, improve, and save lives. These groundbreaking inventions include a brain cancer vaccine that signifies a quantum leap in tumor treatment, a for-life transplant that the body no longer rejects, a prosthesis that feels, a fast-acting antidepressant and a heart failure predictor. Meet the creators behind each technology and how they brought them to life in Medical Wonders.
From the Rockies to Japan's mountainous Hokkaido Island, Magic Mountains features seven winter ski destinations that not only offer a memorable experience on the slopes, but provide plenty to do off the slopes as well. This Winter Travel Package includes everything you need to know to plan the ultimate winter getaway, including total travel time, average lift ticket price, where to stay and what to do while you are there. Plus: A Midwest Ski Smackdown rates six ski resorts that are driving distance from Chicago.
Other stories from the December issue include:
- New Jocks on Campus – Robert Morris University is the first college in the country to make video games a varsity sport, as five aspiring gamers recently came to the Chicago campus on sports scholarships to compete in League of Legends, one of the world's most popular online video games.
- Real Estate: The New China Pipeline – With China's upper class ballooning and its currency strengthening, wealthy Chinese buyers have been investing in apartments in Chicago.
- Dining: Pierogi – The doughy Polish dumpling is suddenly taking center stage in Chicago as big-name restaurants - Bohemian House, Longman & Eagle and The Bristol - have started experimenting with traditional and glammed-up versions. Find out where to get your fill.
