Chicago Magazine Follow-Up Investigation into Chicago Police Department's Reporting Tactics Reveals 'New Tricks'
CHICAGO, May 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- One year after Chicago magazine reported that the Chicago Police Department was undercounting homicide rates in the city, the June issue of the magazine features a follow-up investigation, New Tricks, that reveals the problem not only still persists, but the department has since released seven tricks to keeping murder numbers down. Of those, 'omit killings by people who kill while committing another crime' and 'exclude murders that happen on expressways'. Chicago identified 21 victims killed in the city last year whose cases are not counted as 2014 murders by the CPD. According to crime experts and detectives, all 21 cases should count given the rules of the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting program.
On newsstands Thursday, the June issue also features The Savvy Traveler's Guide to Chicago Airports with all the information travelers need to know to start their vacation off on the right foot. Chicago crunched flight statistics and scoured both O'Hare and Midway airports to help you figure out which airlines to fly and when, how to kill time when you get delayed, where to eat (Rick Bayless' Tortas Frontera in O'Hare was named the best airport restaurant in America), and how to save cash at the one place that price gouges you more than movie theaters. Plus, pick a perfect summer destination by discovering which four international cities are now reachable by new direct flights from O'Hare.
With more people – at younger and younger ages – identifying themselves as transgender than ever before, the question of how young is too young to receive cross-sex hormones has become a growing concern among the transgender community. In The Change Agent, Chicago's Senior Editor Elly Fishman interviews Dr. Robert Garofalo of Lurie Children's Hospital who is leading the way in helping transgender kids switch sexes, and shares the stories of four kids at various stages of gender transitioning.
Also included in the June issue of Chicago magazine:
- Dining: Burger Wars – With several national burger joints opening up locations in Chicago over the past few months, Chicago took a look at how these outsiders compare to local favorites including the double from M Burger, Epic Burger's classic and the No. 8 from DMK Burger Bar.

- Real Estate: Going Once, Going Twice…- People often associate the term "house auction" with run-down, foreclosed properties, but Chicago reveals that at the end of April, there were 11 single-family homes with an opening bid set at $500,000 or more heading into auction in the Chicago area. Spring is the peak season for high-end house auctions, and Chicago is here to help with a buyer's guide to bidding on a dream home.
