Chicago Magazine Crowns the 10 Best New Restaurants
CHICAGO, April 13, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The May issue of Chicago magazine features the highly anticipated list of the Best New Restaurants that opened in the 12-month period ending February 28, 2015. Chicago's dining critics fanned out across the city and six-county metro area, eating hundreds of meals at scores of rookie spots (67 in total), revealing 10 stand-outs that prove some chefs and restaurants still aren't afraid to go their own way during a time when others aren't as quick to take culinary risks. The top of this year's list, the Best New Restaurant, and the full list of rankings are also available now at chicagomag.com. This year's list includes a Spanish charmer (MFK), a $3.4 million Japanese restaurant with multiple chefs and concepts (Momotaro) and an incubator for up-and-coming talent (Intro), all with a unique style and vision. Plus: Four chefs you should know, five spots opening soon to watch out for, and an update on Chicago's best new restaurants over the past decade.
Making it into Chicago's list of best new restaurants is hard enough, but graduating to the all-star roster – the monthly-recommended dining listings – is even harder. This issue includes the latest list of 184 Best Restaurants recommended by Chicago's dining critics, only printed twice a year and available at chicagomag.com/dg.
On newsstands Thursday, the May issue also features Surviving the Apocalypse in Suburbia, in which Chicago takes a look at the rise of the "prepper" (aka survivalist) movement throughout Chicago, the suburbs and beyond as more and more people are preparing for society's collapse, the next global pandemic and the consequent end of the world. With each new epidemic or terrorist attack reported by the media, a new batch of preppers is born. After speaking with several of them, Chicago finds the majority to be wealthy, family-focused individuals – or those who seem to have the most to lose.
Other stories from the May issue of Chicago magazine include:
- Would You Buy a Pig From This Man? – Until Louis John Slagel took control of his family farm, Slagel Family Farm was selling meat to countless grocery stores without a single nod. Now, Slagel is a mini-empire, selling hogs for up to $300 a piece and appearing on menus of some of the most popular restaurants in Chicago, including Girl and the Goat, Spiaggia and Boltwood (one of Chicago's Best New Restaurants).
- Business: Food Flight – Chicago gets an exclusive look inside the ugly legal battle between owners of the popular downtown restaurant, Purple Pig, as both sides open up to discuss allegations against one another.
