Chicago Hosts 'Hiring Fair' for Veterans

WASHINGTON, March 15, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is being released by the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans:

The United States Chamber of Commerce, along with the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and the Illinois Chamber, are sponsoring the 2011 Chicago "Hiring our Heroes" veteran employment fair on March 24. This event is unique because employers will be looking to hire veterans at the event, rather than collecting resumes to make decisions later.

The "Hiring Our Heroes" program will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Chicago Hotel, located at 151 E. Wacker Drive. Veterans and their spouses seeking employment are advised to arrive early and bring about 30 resumes and copies of their military discharge and commendation documents.

The Hiring our Heroes event is the result of a partnership between the Department of Labor – Veterans Employment and Training Service (DOL-VETS) and the U.S. Chamber, which launched a 14-state program in October 2010 to help veterans find meaningful employment after separating from the service.

The initiative is part of VETS Assistant Secretary Ray Jefferson's strategy to increase veteran employment opportunities nationwide by working more closely with America's corporate community, veteran-owned businesses and government agencies.

The measure of success for this initiative is placing veterans in well paying career positions. The Chamber and DOL-VETS seek to educate employers on the value of veterans in the workforce, and to help connect employers with veterans through networking opportunities and "hiring fairs" such as the Hiring our Heroes event. Similar programs will be scheduled across the country in the coming months.

Registration for employers with job openings has reached capacity, and veterans and their spouses are encouraged to register on-line to take advantage of the job opportunities presented at this event quickly.
