Since 1997, CDL has transformed the lives of more than 10,000 low-income Chicago students by providing a high-impact after-school program to hone their critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creative skills. A joint program by the Chicago Debate Commission and Chicago Public Schools, CDL motivates students to spend up to 400 hours of out-of-school time participating in debate preparation activities.
Independent, peer-reviewed research based on 10 years of Chicago Public School data shows that debate participation significantly raises grades, increases graduation rates and improves college readiness. During 2012–13, nearly 1,400 students from 46 high schools and 25 middle schools took part in the program.
"Debate is uniquely suited to develop at-risk students' literacy and critical thinking skills, while inspiring academic success and active civic participation," said Edie Canter, Executive Director of the Chicago Debate Commission. "We're proud of our track record of transforming the lives of thousands of Chicago students through debate."
