Chicago Cultural Mile celebrates 2nd Fridays anniversary
Organizers announce kick-off to summer season
CHICAGO, May 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Chicago Cultural Mile Association and dozens of partnering cultural organizations and businesses are celebrating the one year anniversary of 2nd Fridays on the Chicago Cultural Mile with the kick-off of the summer season. "As an association dedicated to raising awareness of the strengths of this unique area, we couldn't be more thrilled to provide programming that creates a new appreciation of this part of Michigan Avenue and the Museum Campus as the destination for art, culture and fun," according to J.R. Davis, Chairman and President of the Chicago Cultural Mile Association.
"This month's 2nd Fridays event will feature a wide range of musical performances, something for everyone's tastes and moods," Davis said. "As always, 2nd Fridays will bring the business and cultural community together by featuring programming and providing visitors with access to free and sharply discounted entertainment, dining and activities," he continued.
Some of the featured events and deals that are being offered on May 8th include:
Chicago Symphony Orchestra: SALONEN CONDUCTS RAVEL
In this first program of the 2015 Reveries and Passions Festival, Esa-Pekka Salonen couples an early Debussy work with two Ravel pieces inspired by youth. The Mother Goose Suite, a radiant collection of musical tales from Tom Thumb to Beauty and the Beast, expresses considerable depth of feeling despite its deceptively simple exterior. A fantasy opera in one act about childhood, L'enfant et les sortileges (The Child and Magic Spells) presents an enchanting and poignant story about a rude child who learns compassion.

Auditorium Theatre: EIFMAN BALLET
Eifman Ballet returns to the Auditorium Theatre to present the American premiere of "Up & Down" by Boris Eifman. Famous for his unique story ballets, Eifman's newest work is set to the jazz music of Alban Berg, Franz Schubert, and George Gershwin, and follows the story of a young psychiatrist slowly driven to madness after being swept up in the money-fueled glamour of a socialite romance in the 1920s. "Of the ballet choreographers making narrative works for major stages, Russian Romantic Boris Eifman is virtually the only one totally in touch with the 21st century," raves the Los Angeles Times.

Harris Theatre: A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE – SCOTTISH BALLET
Based on the Pulitzer Prize–winning American drama by Tennessee Williams, Scottish Ballet's 2012 contemporary adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire—created in conjunction with the play's 65th anniversary year—is considered a modern gem of contemporary dance. The impressionable Blanche DuBois and the temperamental Stanley Kowalski find themselves in constant turmoil in this suspenseful take on lust, desire, and betrayal as only dance can inspire. Conceptualized by theater and film director Nancy Meckler, and choreographed by international dance star and National Dance Award (UK) winner Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, A Streetcar Named Desire delights in its cross-disciplinary style in this one-of-a-kind take on an American classic, presented as part of the company's Chicago debut.
