Chicago Cubs Manager and Former Lafayette College Quarterback Joe Maddon Receives Coordinated Health Legend of The Rivalry Award at Yankee Stadium
NEW YORK, Nov. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Coordinated Health, one of eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey's leading and largest sports medicine programs and specialty hospital networks, today awarded Chicago Cubs manager and former Lafayette College quarterback Joe Maddon the inaugural Coordinated Health Legend of The Rivalry award.
The honor was presented on the field at Yankee Stadium by Coordinated Health founder and CEO Dr. Emil DiIorio minutes before the 150th Meeting of Lehigh University versus Lafayette, college football's oldest rivalry.
For more than 25 years and spanning multiple generations, the Pennsylvania-based Coordinated Health has proudly served as team physicians for both Lafayette and Lehigh sports teams. Working together, all three organizations have forged numerous innovations and advancements in sports medicine.
"Thanks for considering me part of your family," Maddon told Dr. DiIorio in accepting the award. Maddon also thanked Coordinated Health for its recognition of Hazleton Integration Project, Maddon's charity in his hometown of Hazleton, Pa.
Dr. DiIorio said, "I had the honor of serving as team physician for Lehigh University Athletics for more than a decade. Along with my partner Dr. Carl Weiss, who concurrently served as the team physician for Lafayette College Athletics, we had the privilege of caring for these elite student athletes. The Rivalry is much more than a game. It's a tradition of teamwork, leadership and excellence.
"The newly named manager of the Chicago Cubs and a former Lafayette College quarterback, Joe Maddon exemplifies these qualities both on and off the field."
Maddon was the star of the freshman Lafayette-Lehigh game in 1972, completing 14 of 17 passes for four touchdowns as quarterback. He then became a Lafayette standout catcher for three seasons, before dedicating his career to baseball.
The Tiffany & Co.-designed Coordinated Health Legend of The Rivalry award is inscribed with the distinction that earned Maddon the honor—"In recognition of unrivaled performance and dedication on and off the field."
In addition, Coordinated Health will be making an additional contribution to Maddon's Hazleton Integration Project as a sponsor for its All-Star Sports Banquet to be held December 19. Hazleton Integration Project is located in Maddon's hometown of Hazleton, Pa., and provides opportunities for economically challenged children to participate in a variety of no-cost or low-cost, educational, cultural and athletic activities.
"Coordinated Health has been serving the Hazleton community for several years. We share Joe's vision to invest in the community, its families and to provide the best possible care," said Jim Tsokanos, president of Coordinated Health. "In 2015, we will be announcing a major expansion in the area that will provide a new level of care and jobs."
