Chevron Energy Solutions and San Dieguito Union High School District Announce 2MW Solar Project
Project expected to meet 70 percent of electricity needs for two campuses
SAN DIEGO, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Chevron Energy Solutions, a unit of Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX), and San Dieguito Union High School District announced today the start of construction for a 2MW solar project that is expected to save the district more than $10 million in energy savings over the life of the project.
The solar project is expected to produce more than 70 percent of the electricity needed at Canyon Crest Academy and La Costa Canyon High School. By reducing its purchase of utility power, it is anticipated that the district will reduce carbon emissions by more than 2,200 metric tons, equivalent to removing more than 400 cars from the road.
"We are proud that this project will provide savings to the district, which is critical in the current economic environment," said Ken Noah, superintendent of San Dieguito Union High School District. "The project also provides an opportunity to use solar power and improve the environment."
Chevron Energy Solutions designed the solar system and will build, operate, maintain, measure and guarantee the system's performance for the district. The company is the largest installer of solar power in the U.S. education market and has developed hundreds of projects that improve energy efficiency and provide renewable power for education, government and business facilities. The project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and the solar energy system also qualifies for more than $4 million in incentive payments.
"San Dieguito Union High School District is demonstrating to their students, faculty and community how education institutions can harness the sun to generate energy cost savings and clean, renewable power," said Jim Davis, president of Chevron Energy Solutions. "We are also pleased that our collaboration demonstrates to other education institutions the benefits of solar projects."
The groundbreaking event for this project is being held today at Canyon Crest Academy in San Diego. Students, district representatives, government and business officials will attend the event and the project is expected to be completed this year.
