Chesapeake Urology Celebrates Prostate Cancer Awareness Month with the 8th Annual Zero Prostate Cancer Challenge/Baltimore and Country Singer Jimmy Charles
OWINGS MILLS, Md., Sept. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Chesapeake Urology, the largest urology practice in the mid-Atlantic and one of the leading urology groups in the nation, is sponsoring its 8th Annual ZERO Prostate Cancer Challenge/Baltimore (ZPCC) on Sunday, September 14, 2014 during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. The event will be held at Towson University's Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, MD.
Dr. Sanford J. Siegel, President and CEO of Chesapeake Urology, founded the ZERO Prostate Cancer Challenge in 2007, then the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge, in an effort to give back to the community and to raise research funds and awareness for prostate cancer, a disease that affects one in seven American men. Chesapeake Urology treats a third of the prostate cancer patients in Maryland. Dr. Siegel is passionate about men's health and says, "Approximately 250,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year – one new case every 2.5 minutes – and more than 29,000 will die from the disease. This is a treatable cancer if found early."
In 2012 the name was changed to ZERO Prostate Cancer Challenge for the 37 cities across the nation that hold events for prostate cancer awareness and fund raising. Over the past seven years, Chesapeake Urology has raised over $2 million through this initiative for prostate cancer research, awareness and to provide free prostate cancer screenings for Maryland men in need. Chesapeake Urology's foundation partner for the ZPCC is ZERO the End of Prostate Cancer.
This community supported event includes 10K and 5K races, a 1-mile fun walk and a 100 meter Kids Superhero Dash for Dads. The event pays tribute to survivors, creates a fun and healthy venue for families and others, raises awareness for prostate cancer and raises funds for life saving research.
An exciting addition to this year's event is a special appearance by country singer Jimmy Charles who will perform the original tribute song to survivors, "Superman," that he wrote with his lead guitarist, Daniel Gossett and prostate cancer survivor Phil Shulka. Dr. Siegel commented that the song "is a beautiful and emotional tribute to everyone who has or has had cancer and their families and will resonate with millions of people. We are thrilled that Jimmy and his band are supporting the ZPCC and that this special song will be a major factor in creating awareness for this disease and drive funds for research to end prostate cancer."
The song is dedicated to cancer survivors and their families and to Jimmy's father, Chuck, and it also honors Gossett's grandfather who passed away as a result of prostate cancer. Jimmy Charles and the Jimmy Charles Band will be joined by Miss Maryland and Miss Teen Maryland. In addition, the Wylde Fire band will entertain participants. Free food and beverages will be available for all participants and a catered breakfast for all prostate cancer patients and survivors will be provided. The event is family-friendly and activities for children will be provided.
