CHCI Thanks Rep. Ed Pastor for Years of Service to Latino Community
WASHINGTON, Feb. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) congratulates and thanks Congressman Ed Pastor for his 23 years of service to the Latino community, his Arizona constituents, and the nation. "Pastor, who announced his retirement from Congress, served as chair of CHCI from 1995-1996 and CHCI applauds him for his steadfast commitment to developing the next generation of Latino leaders."
"Congressman Ed Pastor will be leaving an indelible mark on Congress and on Arizona's 7th congressional district," said Rep. Rubén Hinojosa, CHCI Chair. "He is a close personal friend who I will miss, and I wish him and his family continued success on this next step."
"Ed Pastor is a champion for Latino youth and throughout his years in Congress and his involvement in CHCI, he was intricately involved as a Chair and board member of the organization," said Esther Aguilera, CHCI President & CEO. "His commitment to providing opportunities for Latino youth played an enormous role in the growth of CHCI in the past twenty years and he will be dearly missed as a friend and an advocate. On behalf of the CHCI Board of Directors, I thank him for his exemplary leadership and service."
Pastor became the first Latino congressman from the state of Arizona when he was elected to office in 1991. Since his chairmanship of CHCI in 1995-96, the organization has grown from serving 45 students each year to its current level of more than 1,600 students annually. Pastor was also instrumental in the creation and growth of CHCI's Ready to Lead program in Arizona and nationally. The program features an intensive one-day workshop providing 9th and 10th grade Latino high school students with the tools and training necessary to prepare for college. It is held on various college campuses across the country and with Pastor's support, a session has been held in Phoenix for each of the past four years.
