Chatsworth Products' Containment Solutions Help Data Centers Meet Calif.'s Title 24 Law
Newly Constructed Data Centers Require Aisle Containment
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., Oct. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- California's Building Efficiency Standards have been updated to include energy efficiency guidelines specifically for data centers. Chatsworth Products' (CPI) Aisle Containment Solutions can help companies comply with this new requirement.
Commonly known as Title 24, the law targets zero net energy use in commercial buildings by 2030. Another requirement in the Title 24 update is that newly constructed, high-density data centers should include some form of airflow containment.
Properly managing airflow in the data center is no longer an option, it's a requirement. When air recirculates and bypasses freely in the facility, server inlet temperatures change inadvertently, which not only damages equipment over time, but it also results in more electricity being spent on cooling.
"If they really want to be green, data center designers need to beat the 2013 Standards design by 15 percent," Joe Loyer, a mechanical engineer at the California Energy Commission stated.
"The performance specification for our aisle containment solutions is one of, if not, the best in the industry, so achieving this 15 percent improvement in efficiency is not a problem for our customers," says Samuel Rodriguez, CPI Product Manager of Cabinet & Thermal Solutions.
With CPI Aisle Containment Solutions, it is possible to achieve "free cooling" in the data center by isolating, redirecting and recycling hot exhaust air. CPI Aisle Containment Solutions allow data center operators to:
- Eliminate hot spots
- Effectively utilize 100 percent of supplied air and reduce chilled air waste
- Improve CRAC efficiency because of higher supply-to-return temperature differences
- Allow increased room temperature and higher set points on cooling equipment and chilled water temperatures as per ASHRAE guidelines, resulting in less electricity consumption using low-cost economizers
CPI's full line of containment solutions is available in four standard configurations in hot aisle containment (HAC) or cold aisle containment (CAC) environments, each addressing the most pressing data center cooling needs, including ones that can be completely customized on site.
