Dr. Sharp joined the academic faculty of the internal residency program at Huntington Memorial Hospital in 1988 after serving as a full-time faculty member at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. Huntington Memorial Hospital has offered a general medical education program for the past 40 years; and during that time nearly 1,000 medical and surgical residents have performed their residency at Huntington, complemented by rotations through Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center. In 2010, the Dr. Charles Sharp Residency in Internal Medicine was named in his honor as a result of a gift from a grateful patient.
"Dr. Sharp has been front and center of all of our growth in graduate medical education, and his dedication, wisdom and genuine caring has helped make us a better hospital," said Hospital President and CEO Steve Ralph. "The presence of residents in a hospital provides an infusion of new ideas and techniques, benefitting patients, established physicians and other
hospital staff members. We know that in his new role Dr. Sharp will continue to influence and mentor residents and junior faculty for years to come."
As faculty emeritus, Dr. Sharp will assist in the recruitment of new house staff, develop protocols and scholarly activities for residents in both internal medicine and surgery programs, and participate in the didactic teaching of residents and students. He will also work closely with the hospital's clinical research committee, assist and mentor internal medicine faculty, and work to develop innovative teaching processes that emphasize quality improvement and patient safety.
Currently Dr. Sharp serves as the chief of the Section of Endocrinology at Huntington Hospital and is also director of the Center for Metabolic Bone Disease and Endocrinology in Pasadena. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and the University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Sharp received his postgraduate training in internal medicine at Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center and served as a postgraduate fellow in diabetics at Rancho Los Amigos/USC Medical Center, followed by a research fellowship in endocrinology at Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center.
