CAMPBELL, Calif., Jan. 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- ChargePoint, the world's largest electric vehicle (EV) charging network, today announced that its connected EV charging solutions are helping top apartments around the U.S. attract and retain residents while making it easy for condominium homeowner associations to accommodate requests for EV charging. Aventino and Rockwell are just two of the many leading residential communities offering smart EV charging as a convenient amenity, with Rockwell leading the way in combining EV charging with stacked parking.
About a third of Americans rent and that proportion is growing. With EV sales increasing 35% year over year, more and more apartment and condo communities in the U.S. will need to start providing EV charging as an amenity for residents soon. ChargePoint station installations in apartments and condos have nearly doubled in the last year, and there are already ChargePoint stations in residential communities across 30 states and provinces.
Located in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco, Rockwell is leading the way for residential communities in the Bay Area and beyond with a unique combination of 30 stacked parking spots featuring EV charging stations. Charging stations move along with the stacked parking system, and ChargePoint's energy management features have enabled Rockwell to support more charging spots while saving on electrical infrastructure costs.
"ChargePoint was instrumental in bringing the convenience of EV charging to our residents at Rockwell," said Michael McCone, Vice President at Oyster Development Corporation. "We needed a partner to help integrate EV charging with stacked parking. ChargePoint worked quickly with our contractor and the building department to make the innovative combination a reality. ChargePoint's simple software and proactive support have made it easy to implement charging and manage electrical capacity to control costs. The stations themselves are sleek and attractive, aligning with our brand and building residents' pride in living here."
ChargePoint smart EV charging for apartments and condos is designed to take the work of managing charging off of property managers' shoulders. Software supports charging in shared or assigned parking spots, and built-in energy management tools control installation and ongoing energy costs for property managers. ChargePoint handles all of the billing, station upkeep and driver support, so property managers can stay focused on resident needs. Residents can rely on the ChargePoint mobile app to check their charging status and easily share charging spots with their neighbors using a feature called Waitlist.
"I'm renewing my lease at Aventino, and a big reason for that is the availability of EV charging," said Hector Morales, a resident at the Aventino apartment community in Los Gatos, developed by the Sobrato Organization and managed by Woodmont Real Estate Services. Morales, who drives a Tesla and has been using ChargePoint for the past year, added, "When I looked around for properties, there weren't many with EV charging. Now that I have convenient charging at home, I can't imagine not having it."
In addition to Aventino and Rockwell, ChargePoint works with many leading property management and development companies, including Greystar, Alliance Residential, Essex Property Trust, UDR, Lennar and Sares-Regis, to bring EV charging to their properties and residents. ChargePoint is also collaborating with other key partners, including San Diego Gas and Electric, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and Southern California Edison, to expand EV charging options for multifamily properties in underserved and disadvantaged communities.
