Championship-Bound New England Patriots' Martellus Bennett Debuts As Guest On PodcastOne's New Millennial-Focused "Forbes Under 30" Podcast
--Bennett Reveals He Almost Wrote Himself In for President, Discusses Sharing the NFL Spotlight with His Brother and Explains Why Football Won't Be His Legacy--
LOS ANGELES, Feb.1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- New England Patriots Tight End Martellus Bennett took a break from his path to the Big Game to appear as the first guest on the Forbes Under 30 podcast, which launched today on PodcastOne. The NFL star displayed his creative side, in addition to discussing his brother's success in the League and why he continues to play football as he creates children's books, apps and more.
The show, hosted byForbes contributor and former PBS host, Steve Goldbloom, is jointly-produced by Forbes and PodcastOne, the nation's largest advertiser-supported podcast network. Centered around young innovators, disruptors and entrepreneurs who are changing the world, this millennial program features past and present members recognized on the Forbes 30 Under 30 lists, along with up-and-comers who match the profile of future list-makers. The first episode is available now on PodcastOne.com, the PodcastOne app and iTunes.
Below are excerpts from the interview:
On Being Self-Aware
Goldblum: "You're also very self-aware. For instance, you voted for yourself for Captain, but then you kind of acknowledged that with a wink. Like you know it's funny."
Bennett: "[Laughter] It is funny though…I almost wrote myself in on the Presidential ballot."
On Competition With His Brother in the NFL
Bennett: "No, we've never competed with one another. We always push each other. Like Michael, his thing is, he always wanted to be in the NFL. He didn't get drafted, but he'll tell you, anytime you ever talk to him, that I've always told him that he could be the best defensive player in the league. Because I saw something in him that he didn't see in himself at one point. And it's the same thing with me, creatively. Michael believes that I'm one of the most creative people in the world…we just support each other, whatever our dreams. Like, whatever my brother's dreams are, they become my dreams. So, when he accomplishes his dreams, I feel a little fulfillment in myself too…I'm never envious. I'm super elated, if anything."
On His Legacy for His Daughter
Bennett: "I could leave a legacy behind that lives on forever and something that you can inherit. I can teach her how to create. I can't teach her how to play football. You know, football only lasts so long. That's not going to be my legacy, as who I am as a person – at least I hope not, because that I probably failed at life, if all I did is on the gridiron."
On Not Letting Football Define You
Bennett: "I've never been just an athlete. I've always been more than an athlete. I'm not a football player. That's just what I do. When football becomes who you are…if you live that life based on what you accomplish only on the field, then it's not always going to be great because you're not always going to be great every time on the field…they've got other people paid millions of dollars to come and replace you. Like, you start off - when I came into the NFL, I'm the lion. The guy in front of me, he's the gazelle. And every day he wakes up, he has to run. Every day, I have to run to chase him so I can eat. But now, I'm the gazelle. And all the younger cats are the lions."
