Chamberlin Edmonds, an Emdeon Company, Named a Certified Application Counselor Designated Organization by CMS
NASHVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Emdeon Inc., a leading provider of healthcare revenue and payment cycle management and clinical information exchange solutions, today announced that Chamberlin Edmonds & Associates, Inc. (CEA), an Emdeon company, has been approved by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to be a multi-state Certified Application Counselor Designated Organization (CDO). On behalf of hospital customers, CEA will now be able to provide services that help individual patients understand, apply and enroll for health coverage through all of the newly-established ACA marketplaces, including federally facilitated marketplaces, state partnership marketplaces and state based marketplaces. The CDO designation provides CEA with the prerequisite organizational status to facilitate the certification of CEA staff members to participate in the Certified Application Counselor (CAC) program in states utilizing a federally facilitated marketplace. CEA already has more than 900 of its employees certified as application counselors.
"This designation by CMS provides the foundation for CEA to extend our patient advocacy service offerings to assist patients that are either newly eligible for Medicaid or can access subsidies to purchase an insurance product on the ACA insurance exchanges," said Ulrich Brechbuhl, executive vice president of revenue cycle solutions for Emdeon and CEO of CEA. "It has always been an integral part of the CEA offering to be able to assist patients with Medicaid and Social Security disability enrollment. Therefore, it is a natural extension to assist patients with healthcare insurance marketplace enrollment when our hospital partners wish to offer this service to patients and their communities," Brechbuhl continued.
CEA, with more than 370 hospital customers in 34 states, has a unique perspective gained from experience with its diverse customer base, including safety net hospitals, academic teaching hospitals and community hospitals. In 2012, CEA submitted more than 350,000 applications for governmental benefits on behalf of uninsured or underinsured patients. CEA trained staff members now will be able to extend their service reach as they help patients that did not qualify for assistance in the past to enroll in qualified health plans offered within the ACA insurance marketplaces.
