SWANAGE, England, July 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2017 Ground Engineering Awards named CH2M and Raymond Brown Construction the winners of the award for best UK Project with a Geotechnical Value between £1 million and £3 million, for their Pines Hotel Cliff Stabilisation Scheme.
The annual Ground Engineering Awards, held in early July, showcased engineering excellence in categories including equipment and technical innovations, consulting firm and contractor of the year, health and safety and sustainability.
The Pines Hotel, located on a coastal cliff in Dorset on the south coast of the United Kingdom, faced a serious threat from erosion and periodic landslides before 2005 when CH2M began implementing the project to stabilise the cliff and save the hotel.
Safeguarding the future of the hotel and property, CH2M's efforts included:
- Conducting initial assessments and feasibility studies.
- Designing, supervising and analysing ground investigations.
- Establishing detailed conceptual models of ground conditions and landslide mechanisms.
- Providing outline and detailed design of the stabilisation works.
- Leading environmental surveys and assessments, stakeholder negotiations, tender and contract document preparation, selection of contractors for tendering and supervision of construction contracts.
Described by Clive Evans, seasoned CH2M contracts supervisor, as the most challenging project he's ever done – the difficult nature of the project, in addition to the site's location included contaminated soil and active landsliding during winter months. The judges for the Ground Engineering Awards recognised these challenges, and celebrated the teamwork between CH2M and Raymond Brown Construction.
"When a teammate whose 35-year career has focused on coastal construction and landslide stabilisation calls a project his most challenging – that's a testament to the obstacles the team overcame to reach a successful solution here," said Mark Johnson, CH2M global tunnels & earth engineering practice director. "And this recognition from the Ground Engineering Awards is further proof of the excellence that went into this impressive achievement."
The Pines Hotel Cliff Stabilisation Scheme project received its award at the Ground Engineering Awards 2017, held 5 July in London. A full list of the award-winners appears here: https://awards.geplus.co.uk/winners-2017.
