WASHINGTON, May 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Navy Reserve Forces Command, using Wi-Fi equipment and Internet protocols provided by CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL), won a Department of the Navy Information Management/Information Technology Excellence Award for providing Wi-Fi service at Navy Reserve Operational Support Centers across the U.S. The project was the first Department of Defense-approved, wide-scale deployment of commercial Wi-Fi to operational sites for the purpose of completing mission-related and readiness-related tasks.

The Navy Reserve Force Navy Operational Support Center Wi-Fi team, which included CenturyLink, was responsible for delivering secure and reliable Wi-Fi capabilities that satisfy Navy Reserve operational and technical requirements and also make a positive impact on mission readiness. The team was recognized for demonstrating superior leadership, technical acumen and perseverance in guiding multiple organizations to provide Wi-Fi access to Navy Reservists.
The team's efforts resulted in greater access to critical information technology resources for a fraction of the cost of a traditional work station. Instead of having to equip each Reservist with expensive hardware systems, approximately 34,000 Navy Reservists are now using their personal computer and government-provided common access card reader to access the Internet via hotspots.
"CenturyLink is proud of its work with the Naval Reserve Forces Command to provide secure Wi-Fi equipment and circuitry that let Reservists use hotspots to access the Internet at Navy Reserve Operational Support Centers across the country," said Diana Gowen, CenturyLink senior vice president and general manager, who oversees solutions for federal government customers. "It's an honor for CenturyLink to provide America's Navy personnel with advanced technology solutions that improve mission readiness."
The award was presented at the Department of the Navy Information Technology Conference held during the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association International and U.S. Naval Institute (AFCEA/USNI) West 2012 conference in San Diego.
