BOSTON, June 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- As advanced safety and infotainment features spread across model lines, the user experience of the on-board console and cluster displays is becoming a more vital consideration for cabin design. A new report from the In-vehicle UX (IVX) group at Strategy Analytics "In-vehicle Displays: Design Review and Recommendations", has found that a well-designed user experience for such a system will rely on a number of factors, and display characteristics will certainly play a part.

Key report findings include:
- More center multifunction displays will be arriving in mid-size vehicles, and the size of center multifunction displays will continue to increase. This will also lead to an increase in the number of touchscreens, which will enhance discoverability and access of infotainment features.
- A capacitive touch interface is becoming increasingly familiar and acceptable among all types of displays thanks to the advancement of such interfaces on mobile devices.
- Interest in rear-seat displays is forecast to grow wider and broader as consumers place increasing importance in on-board WiFi, certain connected services, and infotainment. Due to the increased importance placed on interactive features, these displays are also transitioning from passive to interactive touchscreens.
- Cluster displays are being used increasingly to convey all sorts of information to the driver, but large amounts of information and limited space means that these displays are more prone to clutter and usability issues than other types of displays.
"Over the next 3 to 5 years consumers will want better access to connected features in the car, but innovation in safety or drive-critical features will be limited to collision warnings and semi-autonomous functions," commented Derek Viita, Senior Analyst and report author. "As we approach 10 years out however, semi-autonomous features will become more sophisticated in premium model lines, and basic semi-autonomous features (such as park assist) could become widespread among economy and mid-range vehicles."
