FREEHOLD, N.J., July 27, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute (AOSMI) holds the orthopedic specialists in its practice to a rigorous level of professionalism and expertise. One way this is demonstrated is through maintaining certification with professional boards, such as The American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). Dr. Alan Nasar, FAAOS, and Dr. James Cozzarelli, FAAOS, recently underwent the recertification process with ABOS, maintaining their commitment to provide quality care to their patients.

Board certification differs from licensure; while licensure is typically granted through the state in which the specialist practices, board certification involves meeting the standards of practice and knowledge deemed necessary by a consensus of experts within the profession. ABOS has been in existence since the 1930's and is comprised of 20 directors with varying levels of seniority, along with one public (non-surgeon) member.
The initial certification process for ABOS is quite extensive, involving both a written and oral examination, in addition to meeting education and practicum requirements prior to applying. In order to qualify for board certification, an orthopedic practitioner must be licensed by the state within which he or she practices. Once obtained, the certification is valid for a period of 10 years, after which the practitioner must apply for recertification.
Requirements for recertification include:
- Verification of licensure in any states in which the orthopedic specialist practices.
- Evidence of continuing education meeting the 120-credit requirement within a three year period.
- Passing a secure examination testing knowledge and expertise in current best practices.
- Undergoing extensive peer review through case lists and patient survey records, along with interviews with other medical professionals that have worked with the orthopedic specialist in question.
"The landscape of our field is constantly changing and improving," explains Dr. Cozzarelli. "The recertification process holds us accountable to staying up to date on the latest and best techniques and information."
