Central DuPage Hospital One of a Few in the Nation to Study Causes of Brain Aneurysm Rupture
Hospital also offering aneurysm support group for patients and families
WINFIELD, Ill., Sept. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- According to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, as many as 25,000-27,000 people in the U.S. suffer from brain aneurysm rupture every year and 15 percent of patients with a rupture die before even reaching the hospital. Central DuPage Hospital (CDH) in Winfield, Ill., is one of a few hospitals in North America to examine what may cause instability and rupture of brain aneurysms. The hospital's investigator-led study also aims to educate the public about early detection and possible safe intervention of brain aneurysms while raising awareness.

Understanding why an aneurysm may rupture is critical in advancing diagnosis and treatment. Rajeev Deveshwar, M.D., endovascular surgical neuroradiologist on the medical staff at CDH and his colleague, Junaid Mansuri, clinical researcher in the Neurosciences Institute of CDH, are leading a study to examine why certain aneurysms rupture while others stay stable. Patients can choose to participate in Dr. Deveshwar's research study by agreeing to share their angiogram scan and medical information for 3D modeling and blood flow simulation, which will further analyze the properties of the aneurysm.
The ultimate goal of his study is to determine whether there is a way to predict when an aneurysm may rupture and if so, what signs and/or symptoms may lead to better identification.
"If we are able to better predict aneurysm rupture, we will be able to treat aneurysms at an earlier stage, ultimately preventing potentially fatal events," says Dr. Deveshwar.
Free, Monthly Support Group Meetings
In addition to the study, CDH offers a free, monthly support group for people diagnosed with a brain aneurysm and their caregivers. The group meets every third Monday of the month from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Women & Children's Conference Room at CDH. The next meeting will be held on Sept. 26.
Led by young brain aneurysm survivor, Roopa Desai, and Diane Broadley, R.N. at CDH, the support group is an opportunity to discuss personal experiences with an aneurysm, promote aneurysm education and discuss the issues and hardships that both a survivor and caregiver experience following diagnosis.
