Centerplate's Hospitality Operations Support AT&T Park's LEED Silver Certification
Hospitality Partner's Aggressive Recycling, Biodegradable Foodservice, Waste Diversion and Menu Choices Help Earn San Francisco Ballpark the First Such LEED Silver Certification to an MLB Venue
STAMFORD, Conn., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Centerplate, the largest hospitality partner to North America's premier sports stadiums, convention centers and entertainment venues, announced today its role in AT&T Park's recent achievement of LEED Silver Certification for an Existing Building. As the first major league ballpark to receive the honor, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) awarded the Silver Certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Existing Buildings, Operations and Maintenance (EBO&M) to AT&T Park this month, crediting in part the facility's environmentally conscious food and beverage operations. Centerplate's sustainability programs at AT&T Park include new 'green' concession stands, biodegradable and compostable foodservice items, a comprehensive waste diversion and recycling program and environmentally conscious menu choices.
Centerplate's kitchen facilities and concessions areas, which are outfitted with eco-friendly lighting, paint and refrigeration equipment, have worked to convert the Park's most popular concessions stands, Gilroy Garlic Fries, into sustainable concepts of operation this season by retrofitting cooking equipment that reduces oil consumption by 32 percent and cuts utility cost by more than half. When no longer usable, all food storage containers in the Centerplate kitchens are composted and recycled; similarly, Centerplate offers biodegradable and compostable options for the facility's disposable foodservice items, including cups, utensils and plates, made from corn or potato starch, dramatically reducing the collective environmental impact of over 40,000 San Francisco Giants fans on game days.
In partnership with the Giants, Centerplate also operates an aggressive waste diversion program, channeling 67 percent of waste from landfill-bound trashcans to recycling and composting centers. Committed to offering local San Francisco culinary traditions, the company's menu offerings at AT&T Park include many locally sourced and organic items, allowing for reduced fuel emissions and pesticide use. Centerplate's extensive vegetarian menu also offers Giants fans many low-impact menu options.
"We are proud to support AT&T Park as its hospitality partner and are honored that our efforts to make environmentally conscious choices have helped the facility earn a prestigious LEED Silver Certification for Existing Buildings," said George Wooten, Centerplate's Executive Vice President of Operations. "Last year, Travel + Leisure Magazine crowned AT&T the 'champion of stadium food,' this year we are taking home a top environmental honor. It's achievements like these that tell us we're on our way to becoming number one in hospitality."
The announcement comes on the heels of other recent Centerplate news, including new menu concepts and facility upgrades at each of its MLB partner venues. Centerplate also acted as a hospitality provider to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, offering a rustic, Vancouver-flavored menu comprised of locally sourced ingredients at the Games' Opening and Closing Ceremonies, as well as comprehensive waste diversion programs that recycle 180,000 kilos of material each year. Last year, Centerplate converted two of its largest convention center partners, the two-million square foot Dallas Convention Center and North America's second busiest convention facility the Orange County Convention Center, into 100 percent biodegradable operations for its disposable foodservice items. This biodegradable solution earned the program's architects a 2009 Hall of Headliners Award from Venues Today Magazine.
