Center For Sight Offers Las Vegas Cataract Patients New Extended Depth of Focus Lens Implants for Reduced Dependence on Glasses
LAS VEGAS, Nov. 16, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Las Vegas ophthalmology practice, Center For Sight, announced today the successful outcome of its initial cataract surgical procedures featuring the FDA-approved, Tecnis Symfony intraocular lens (IOL). The first in a new category of lenses, Tecnis Symfony is the only IOL in the United States that provides a full range of continuous high-quality vision following cataract surgery, while also mitigating the effects of presbyopia by helping people focus on near objects. The FDA approval includes a version of the lens for individuals with astigmatism, a corneal condition that causes blurry or distorted vision—the Tecnis Symfony Toric IOL.
Eva Liang, MD, is Center For Sight medical director and an eye surgeon with the practice. During the course of her career, she has performed thousands of cataract surgeries, including several recent Symfony lens implant procedures.
"For the entire visual range—near, intermediate, and far—we are very impressed with our post-operative patient outcomes using Tecnis Symfony IOLs, with near-range results even better than expected," said Dr. Liang. "We are excited to offer the only depth-of-focus lenses on the market today, available in other countries for many years, but only very recently in the United States."
Cataracts are a common condition, with almost 4 million corrective surgeries performed each year. By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have already had cataract surgery. While most cataract patients are seniors, it is estimated that nearly one in four cataract surgeries will be performed on people younger than 65.
Center for Sight patient, Xantippe Gann, of Las Vegas, received her first Symfony implant in September. She turns 57 years old, this week.
"Symfony lenses were the best birthday present I could ask for," said Ms. Gann, who had suffered from a slow-growing form of cataracts, since she was in her 30s. "Before the surgery, I couldn't see the computer screen. I couldn't see my crochet stitches. When the surgery was over, I looked up and could see Dr. Liang's face, plain as day. It was so amazing. The next day, at my post-op appointment, I realized that I was reading lines on a chart I could never see before. I was so happy, I just started crying."
During cataract surgery, the natural lens of the eye is removed, and an artificial lens, called an intraocular lens, or IOL, is inserted into the eye. The IOL most commonly used in cataract surgery is a monofocal lens, which only allows the person to see at one focal point. Most people select distance vision, but closer objects will be out of focus. In contrast, the Symfony lens was specifically developed with features to improve both the range and quality of vision.
For patients like Ms. Gann and others, the Symfony lens offers the option of crisp, clear vision at all distances. Said Ms. Gann: "Because of my lifestyle, Dr. Liang thought that Symfony would be the best fit. She took the time to explain everything to me in great detail. Being able to see as well as I do now is truly life altering. I can read the Powerpoint at work. I can see my needle point at home. My depth of focus is amazing! I can read a magazine, I can see my computer, I can see road signs—all without glasses or contacts. Not in my entire life have I been able to see this well."
