Centenary Student Meets Tommy Hilfiger at the Black Retail Action Group (BRAG) Gala and Receives $5,000 Scholarship From Phillips-Van Heusen
HACKETTSTOWN, N.J., Nov. 15, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Centenary College senior Rosa Cisneros was recently awarded a scholarship at the Black Retail Action Group (BRAG) 40th Annual Scholarship and Awards Dinner Gala at the Cipriani in New York City. BRAG, a national not-for-profit organization that works towards maintaining diversity in retail and related industries, honored fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger, with the BRAG Business Achievement Award; supermodel Tyson Beckford, with the BRAG Special Recognition Award; and Cookie Johnson, with the J.J. Thomas Business Innovators Award.
Cisneros, a Fashion Design major, received a $5,000 scholarship from Phillips-Van Heusen. To qualify for this scholarship, Cisneros submitted an essay entitled "Promoting Diversity in Retail and Related Businesses in the Economic Downfall and Why it is Important" and was interviewed by a representative of BRAG. Cisneros aspires to a corporate position after she graduates, and eventually own her own business.
"BRAG provides opportunities to recognize the good work of students, and it pleases me that Rosa was selected for this honor," says Gary L. Lampley, President of BRAG. "This is an accolade that she can highlight on her resume and provide her with a significant edge in this very competitive yet exciting industry."
BRAG also sponsored a pre-Gala event at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). Cisneros, along with fellow fashion students, participated in an executive roundtable and Q&A with industry giants such as Ronald Onorato, President of Stop and Shop New York Metro Division; Michael Vitelli, President of Best Buy Americas, Enterprise Executive Vice President; Robert Wallstrom, President of Saks Off Fifth Stores; and Richard Dent, CFO of Victoria's Secret Pink. Discussions included what's new in Japanese, eco-friendly and sustainable fashion.
"I want to thank BRAG and Phillips-Van Heusen for honoring me," says Cisneros. "I learned so much and the networking opportunities that were afforded to me were priceless."
Centenary established a BRAG chapter in Spring 2009. Its current President, Stacey Holloway, was honored by BRAG with a scholarship from Macy's in 2008.
The Fashion Merchandising and Design major at Centenary College studies the planning and control of products in the fashion industry in order to meet consumer demand. Graduates are prepared to begin their careers in the fashion industry as buyers, fashion coordinators, product managers, retail managers, merchandisers and product developers.
